This book is part of the People's History series and covers a topic which is seldom singled out. Miller accurately and fairly covers the lives of women from the colonial times through the American Revolution. There are chapters on Native Americans, white women, black women slaves, and indentured servants. Each chapter discusses the work that the women did, their stature in society, their relationships with other women in the same class and their relationships with women in other classes. Occasionally specific women are quoted, but as the author points out in the Author's Notes section, women of this era rarely recorded their thoughts. Pictures and maps round the work and there is a bibliography as well as a list of suggested books and websites.
The book is factually accurate and written in approachable language. Enough detail is provided so as to make it interesting, but not so much so as to overwhelm. This book would work well for students studying this time period or women's rights.
